Although the distance limited our time together, I retain many memories of your hospitality during our all too infrequent visits. A fond memory was when you took the time to set Sophie up with your fishing rod off the stern of your boat moored along the Thames before sharing a picnic lunch, after, of course, the obligatory liquid lunch.

I remember the first time I met John and Penny, shortly after David and I married. We gathered at a restaurant where I ordered scampi, which, unlike in the U.S., it came with head, tail, and legs intact. I felt green looking at my food looking back at me. I said, “I can’t do this,” and John kindly showed me how. I didn’t dare say that it grossed me out because I did not want to embarrass myself in front of David’s long-time friends. But mostly I will remember John as the riverman who took David, Sophie, and me on journeys with Penny on the Thames. All the while, he entertained us with his many interesting boating and motorcycle stories.
